With bowl games already upon us, well get a look at some of the breakout players in college football for 2017.With the season is almost over, bowl games will begin to showcase what teams will be returning to the football field next year. While transfers will still have to wait until spring, some backup players will have an opportunity to showcase what fans will have to look forward to next season.Article continues below ...Overall, there were quite a few underclassmen who put on performances that instantly put them in the breakout player category. The breakout players are expected to have prime seasonsthat put them square in the middle of the best player in college football talk.LSU running back Leonard Fournette is out for the Citrus Bowlagainst Louisville on December 31. His backup will have an opportunity to show what he can do in the Citrus Bowl as well next season. The pressure for the receiving corps to improve lies on one receiver with Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson winning the Heisman this past season. With former Houston head coach Tom Herman heading to Texas, their starting quarterback is one name on the list of breakout players to watch out for. The Oregon Duck fall from the AP Top 25 could be short-lived, especially given what theyre left with at quarterback.Next season brings a lot of promise, so here are next season breakout players for 2017.Next Shane BuecheleNov 5, 2016; Lubbock, TX, USA; Mandatory Credit Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports10. QB Shane Buechele, TexasIn his freshman season, quarterback Shane Buechele had a better start to the season than he finished. Buechele led the Longhorns to a 50-47 double-overtime upset over Notre Dame, passing for 280 yards and two touchdowns https://www.ducksfanscollegeshop.com/114-Ducks_Terry_Wilson_Jr_Jersey. But under Charlie Strong, the Longhorns dropped their last three games of the season with Buechele throwing six interceptions and two touchdowns. The Longhorns have since fired Charlie Strong and hired Tom Herman as their head coach. It bodes well for a Texas offense that returns a promising young quarterback. The move instantly puts Buechele on the list of players to watch. Herman led Houston to a record of 22-5 in two seasons as their head coach. The Cougars have defeated Florida State, Louisville and Oklahoma in the past two seasons.Buechele didnt put up terrible numbers this season either. He threw for 2,958 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also rushed for 161 total yards and two touchdowns. Look for him to make some noise in the Big 12 next season.Next Van JeffersonOct 22, 2016; Baton Rouge, LA, USA; Mandatory Credit Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports9. WR Van Jefferson, Ole MissThe Ole Miss Rebels didnt see many wins this season despite having quarterback Chad Kelly on the field. Still, there no need to panic as their receiving corps, led by freshman receiver Van Jefferson, is in good shape.Jefferson was second on the team in receptions this season with 49. He is third on the team this season in receiving yards with 543 and receiving touchdowns with three. Jefferson was selected to this year All SEC-Freshman team. He averaged 45.3 receiving yards per game and 11.1 yards per catch. With quarterback Chad Kelly graduating, Jefferson, along with receivers D.K. Buford and Damoreea Stringfellow, should make the new quarterback transition pretty seamless. Jefferson had at least one catch in every game this season for the Rebels.Next Ed OliverNov 17, 2016; Houston, TX, Mandatory Credit Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports8. DT Ed Oliver, HoustonThe Houston Cougars probably wont fall too far down the ranks, as their defense is still stacked. Exhibit A Freshmandefensive tackle Ed Oliver. Oliver led the FBS in tackles for loss this season with 22. He also racked up 65 total tackles , five sacks, six pass deflections and two forced fumbles.Oliver was first on the Cougars in tackles for loss, third in sacks, third in pass deflections, and one of three players on the team tied with two forced fumbles. With linebackers Steven Taylor and Tyus Bowser graduating, look for Oliver to really step up his game.Former offensive coordinator Major Applewhite will take over head coaching duties so dont expect much to change on both sides of the ball. If anything, look for a more motivated Cougars squad. They lost the Las Vegas Bowl 34-10 to San Diego State, but Oliver did have 5 total tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss in the game.Next Bryce LoveNovember 26, 2016; Stanford, CA, USA; Mandatory Credit Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports7. RB Bryce Love, StanfordWith Christian McCaffrey sitting out the Stanford Cardinal bowl game against North Carolina, well get a good look at sophomore running back Bryce Love. Love is third in the Pac-12 this season with 7.4 yards per carry. On the year, he carried the ball 90 times for 664 yards and two touchdowns.Love has ran the ball for over 100 rushing yards twice this season https://www.ducksfanscollegeshop.com/77-Ducks_Justin_Herbert_Jersey. In the team final game of the season, he ran the ball seven times for 111 yards and a touchdown. Hell be a nice change of pace to what McCaffrey has done in his time at Stanford the past three seasons. Theyll still be a run-heavy team as well. This season, McCaffrey led the Pac-12 in rushing attempts with 252 and rushing yards with 1,596. Love will have big shoes to fill but it helped he played backup to McCaffrey the past two seasons.Next Derrius GuiceNov 24, 2016; College Station, TX, USA; Mandatory Credit Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports6. RB Derrius Guice, LSUSophomore running back Derrius Guice had quite the season despite backing up Leonard Fournette. With Fournette battling an ankle injury for much of the season, Guice ran for 1 https://www.ducksfanscollegeshop.com/91-Ducks_Matt_Mariota_Jersey,249 yards and 14 touchdowns in 11 games. With Fournette sitting out the Citrus Bowl and leaving for the NFL, Guice ceiling for improvement rises.Guice had a career-high 37 carries for 285 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the Tigers 54-39 season finale over Texas AM. He rushed for over 200 rushing yards twice and over 100 rushing yards three other times this season.Guicestarted the last five games for the LSU Tigers this season. He is averaging 113.5 rushing yards per game and eight yards per carry. He leads the SEC in rushing touchdowns and is second in the conference in rushing yards. Look for him to have a strong 2017 season.Next Justin HerbertNov 12, 2016; Eugene, OR, USA; Mandatory Credit Scott Olmos-USA TODAY Sports5. QB Justin Herbert, OregonThe Oregon Ducks will be in good hands under new head coach Willie Taggart. Quarterback Justin Herbert shouldnt have a hard time adjusting to his new ball coach. Tossed in the fire in the middle of the season, Herbert started seven games for Oregon this season. He became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for the Ducks since 1983.Herbert threw for 1,936 passing yards, 19 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. He also ran for 161 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Herbert completed 63.5 percent of his passes this season, which ranks third in the Pac-12. He was an accurate passer but the Oregon defense was pretty bad all season long. They gave up 41.4 points per game, which is 126th out of 128 FBS teams.Look for the Ducks to find their way back to the top behind quarterback Justin Herbert and company.Next Jaylen SmithNov 5, 2016; Boston, MA, USA; Mandatory Credit Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports4. WR Jaylen Smith, LouisvilleThe Louisville Cardinals offense will see more passing opportunities for Heisman winner Lamar Jackson next season. That instantly boosts his favorite target, receiver Jaylen Smith, to the top of the list of breakout players.Smith caught 27 passes for 599 receiving yards and six touchdowns this season. catching at least one pass in every game. His best performance came against Boston College where he caught six passes for 123 receiving yards and a touchdown.Smith is second in the ACC and fifth in the FBS in receiving yards per reception with 22.2 yards per catch. He was third on the team in receiving yards this season behind receiver James Quick and tight end Cole Hikutini. Both players will graduate after this season. With their departures, things open up for the possibility of Smith having a big junior season. Lamar Jackson draft hopes are on the line, so look for Smith to play a large role in any successhe hasnext season.Next Jarrett StidhamNov 21, 2015; Stillwater, OK, USA; Credit Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports3 https://www.ducksfanscollegeshop.com/130-Ducks_Adam_Stack_Jersey. QB Jarrett Stidham, AuburnThe Auburn Tigers may have finally solved their quarterback problem. Quarterback Jarrett Stidham is eligible to play next season for the Tigers. He gives Auburn their best quarterback arguably since Cam Newton stepped on campus. If you dont remember quarterback Jarrett Stidham, you should. As a freshman at Baylor, Stidham threw for 1,265 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions. He completed 68.8 percent of his passes. At 8-4 this season, Auburn found themselves rotating three quarterbacks before deciding on Sean White by mid-October. However, White hurt his shoulder, thus putting the quarterback position in further disarray.Head coach Gus Malzahn hopes that with Stidham under center, the Tigers can breakout and return to SEC prominence. Theyll return two running backs that ran for over 800 rushing yards each in 2016 as well.Next Jacques PatrickNov 11 https://www.ducksfanscollegeshop.com/24-Ducks_Canton_Kaumatule_Jersey, 2016; Tallahassee, FL, USA; Mandatory Credit Glenn Beil-USA TODAY Sports2. RB Jacques Patrick, Florida StateAfter two seasons of playing behindrunning back Dalvin Cook, it time to see what running back Jacques Patrick can do. Patrick ran for 348 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the year. His freshman season included 314 rushing yards and five touchdowns. He due for a breakout year in 2017.Patrick split carries with Cook early in the season and he did well. He carried the ball 20 times for 124 rushing yards and a touchdown in a 55-35 victory over South Florida. Theyll face the Michigan Wolverines in the Orange Bowl on December 30, and the Wolverines boast a very good defense. Look for Patrick to be an X-factor when the two teams face each other. With Cook completely out of the way next season, look for Patrick to make a name for himself. Hell be a nice rusher to have with quarterback Deondre Francois on the field.
