TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) -- Taiwan may relax its tight restrictions on chip investments in rival China by allowing its chip factories there to use slightly more advanced technology, an official said on Monday.

Taiwan now allows its chip firms to build eight-inch wafer plants in China, using older 0.25-micron technology. But chipmakers in China may be allowed to move up to the 0.18-micron circuits, said Huang Chin-tan, head of the Investment Commission.

The island's major chipmakers have already moved on from the more advanced 0.13-micron technology to the state-of-the-art 90-nanometer circuits.

Taiwanese authorities have imposed the restrictions to make sure the island won't lose its cutting-edge technology to China. But chipmakers have pressured the government to allow them to take advantage of China's cheap labor costs to increase their competitiveness.

Authorities in Taiwan may also allow chip testing and packaging firms to invest on the mainland, Huang said.

"If a technology is already mature or it doesn't have any significant impact on the industry, then of course we should consider more openness," Huang said. "The technology requirement for medium-to-low chip testing-packaging services isn't high."

Officials said the Cabinet is expected to decide on the issue late this year.

Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949, and China has threatened to use force to help bring Taiwan to its fold.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest made-to-order chip supplier by revenue, is the only Taiwanese chipmaker being allowed to invest in China.

Two memory-chip makers -- ProMOS Technologies Inc. and Powerchip Semiconductor Corp. -- have yet to receive government approval for their plans to invest in China.
