China overtook the United States in 2004 to become the world's leading exporter of information and communications technology goods, according to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a multi-national economic think tank based in Paris.

While the data shows a definite trend toward China's emergence in technology goods, many of China's exported goods are from foreign-invested enterprises, making the value of the rise in Chinese exports for the nation difficult to quantify.

China exported $180 billion worth of information and communications technology goods in 2004, compared with U.S. exports in the same category valued at $149 billion, according to the data. In 2003, the U.S. led with exports of information and communications technology goods worth $137 billion, followed by China with $123 billion, OECD said.

China's share of total world trade in information and communications technology goods, including both imports and exports, rose to $329 billion in 2004, up from $234 billion in 2003 and $35 billion in 1996, OECD said. The U.S. share of total world trade stood at $375 billion in 2004, $301 billion in 2003 and $230 billion in 1996, according to OECD.

The data show a shift towards more trade between China and other Asian countries, with a corresponding decline in information and communications technology imports to this region from the European Union and the United States, OECD said.

To manufacture laptops and advanced mobile phones, China previously relied on electronic components imported from the E.U. and U.S., OECD said, but these are now also being increasingly sourced from other Asian countries, including Japan (18 percent of China's information and communications technology imports), Taiwan (16 percent), Korea (13 percent) and Malaysia (8 percent), according to the data.

OECD said the increased share of Japan's exports to China was mainly in electronic components. But the agency added that China itself is also manufacturing and exporting more electronic components than ever before, with these now forming China's second largest export item, after computer and related equipment.

OECD said China is the single largest exporter of information and communications technology goods to the U.S., supplying 27 percent of all U.S. imports of these goods in 2004, up from only 10 percent in 2000. China's information and communications technology trade surplus with the U.S. stood at $34 billion in 2004, the OECD said, and China's surplus with European Union stood at $27 billion

A recent report of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned of uneven economic growth around the world and increased tensions in trade.
Xinhua News Agency spoke with the well-known Argentine economist Jorge Marchini, vice president of the Latin American Integration Foundation (FILA), about the latest update of the IMF's World Economic Outlook.
"There is unevenness in the growth results: one (region) is the United States, which has growth and momentum, and the other is Europe, which is in a neutral position. Asian driving is important, and in Latin America (growth) is negative, "said Marcini.
The IMF forecasts global economic growth this year and the next at 3.9 percent, but not in all directions, with gross domestic product (GDP) declining in some regions and increasing in others .

I was totally amazed by IT technologies nowadays. They had significantly changed the flow of life. I am a bit worried about The gender divide in social media as I see some existing problems in it.
